What is Family?

(definition taken from Wikipedia)

A family consists of a domestic group of people (or a number of domestic groups), typically affiliated by birth or marriage, or by analogous or comparable relationships — including domestic partnership, cohabitation, adoption, surname and (in some cases) ownership (as occurred in the Roman Empire).

In many societies, family ties are only those recognized as such by law or a similar normative system. Although many people (including social scientists) have understood familial relationships in terms of "blood", many anthropologists have argued that one must understand the notion of "blood" metaphorically, and that many societies understand "family" through other concepts rather than through genetic distance.

Article 16(3) of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights says: "The family is the natural and fundamental group unit of society and is entitled to protection by society and the State".

So what is family to you?

What is family?

Shiela posed a very timely question, specially this Lent-Easter season.

Remember that the Catholic Church teaches: God is family.

I'll say it again: God is family. The Church is not saying that God is like family; nor does it say God is similar to a family. It saying that one of the attributes and names of God is family.

Why? Because in God there is fatherhood. There is a father who has begotten a Son from eternity. This means that the father pours out his life to His Son through His life-giving spirit, which is the Holy Spirit, the third person in the Godhead. The eternally begotten (not born) Son Jesus, in turn, gives back this life through His thanksgiving (eucharistia) sacrifice to the father through the Holy Spirit in what the early Church fathers call the eternal dance of love and life.

This is a mystery, of course. which cannot be fully comprehended during this lifetime.

Suffice to say that in God, there is fatherhood (God the Father), sonship (God the Son) and the bond of every family which is love (God the Holy Spirit).

Note therefore that our family, like any other family, draws its family identity from God, and it is through the family that God also chooses to reveal Himself.

That I hope explains why family is so important, and that the devil is truly working overtime to breakup families through divorce, contraception, abortion, euthanasia, legalization of same-sex relations and marriages. All these and other similar evils prevent family.

Relatives, take a stand please. This elections, make your vote count. A case in point is Sectoral Rep Lisa Massa, who is so into feminine rights that she advocates for controlled family through artificial means like contraception. This kind of person should not be in Congress.

Of course, Manny Pacquiao and Chavit Singson shouldn't also be in Congress, not because they are for contraception but because they might not have the educational background for lawmaking.
